I took this picture yesterday at Longsdon apiary (many thanks to Dr Nick Mawby for allowing access to the apiary).
I spent some time planning this shot because I’ve been to the apiary in the past and I wanted to recreate an image I’d taken before. The previous image was similar to this but it didn’t have the same depth of field. So this time I went geared up with lights so that I could shoot at a smaller aperture. Here’s the earlier image:
It really bothered me that the bee’s abdomen is blurred and for a competition about macro photography I thought this wasn’t good enough. So I re-created the image. I also added a light behind the honeycomb to create a backlit sunshine effect.
