This picture shows the entrance to The Lowry, a theatre and gallery complex in Salford Quays, Manchester. The building is striking but difficult to capture in a single frame. I tried photographing it from different angles and with different fields of view but I felt that none of the images was doing the building justice.
At the time, I was exploring ways of combining multiple images of the same subject in portrait photography. With this approach, I walk around my portrait subject taking about six photographs and then I combine them and mask back in the detail in important areas. It occurred to me that this approach might work with this series of images, so I tried various combinations and I was really pleased with the result. With the strong lines and curves of the building, the final image reminds me of Georges Braque's Cubist paintings.
