First light, Hamnøy by David Travis

First light, Hamnoy by David Travis

I took this image in January 2023 during a trip to the Lofoton islands in Norway. It's a popular spot with photographers so to make your image stand out you need to hope for the right conditions. I got to the spot well before dawn in the hope that I would get some nice light. There had been a recent dump of snow which really added to the mood. This picture reminds me how important a bit of luck is to a good landscape image. Because I went back to the same location a couple of days later and the scene was nowhere near as picturesque: the weather had got unseasonably warm, the snow had melted and it was overcast. Of course, you can make your own luck by continuing to visit a location until the weather and lighting conditions work out.
