Fun with Fungi

These pictures show various types of mushroom spotted in a conifer wood near Ladybower in the Peak District. I noticed the wood while on a walk but didn’t have the right camera gear with me, so I went back last week.

The location isn't easy to get to. I needed to drive for an hour, cycle for 3 miles and then hike a mile uphill (while carrying an 18lb pack). You’ll need to let me know if it was worth it!

I've identified some of these mushrooms but I'm not confident about others, so I've left those untitled.

The wood is dense with pine trees and the canopy is overgrown. If there’s a mushroom wood where fairies come out to play, this is it. To give you some idea of how dense it is, when I left the wood it was clear that there had been a heavy downpour of rain but inside the wood I hadn’t noticed.

It’s impossible to walk around, so most of the time I was crawling (being careful to avoid the badger and fox droppings). It was dark, so for these images, I used a couple of portable LED lights.

There were so many mushrooms in such good condition that I spent hours taking photographs. All of these images are focus stacked (with anything from 5 to 15 images) to ensure I got front to back focus.

The main problem I ran into was stabilising my camera and the lights. I brought mini-tripods to support my gear but the ground was rarely flat where I wanted it to be.

Another problem was balancing the artificial light with the ambient light. I wanted to capture some of the environment as I didn’t want the images to appear like they were taken in a studio. But if I added too much light to the mushrooms, the background went pitch black. So these were often taken with the LED lights on their lowest setting, just adding a small amount of light to the subject.

It’s a wonderful location and very quiet. All the time I was in the wood, I didn’t see or hear another person.
